Woodstock, GA: Tile Patio floor MAKEOVER!

It was a hot week for the guys at Hamilton Tile during this Woodstock, GA tile patio makeover. 80 degree temperatures brought out our inner toughness and tested our endurance!

We are admittedly indoor cats, but at the same time we are not afraid of some hard work.

This video documents our week of installing this patio floor and the techniques we used in order to get it done "to last", because what's the point of tile if you don't get it's lifetime qualities?

A beautiful floor….but there’s more than meets the eye. What’s UNDERNEATH this tile, is what gives this floor it’s lasting and quality characteristics.

EVERY tile, had this kind of thin set coverage. You have to TRY to get this with a conscious plan and persistence.

Our whole plan of attack is focused on this control joint. These joints allow the cement slabs to move independently. You may have them in your cement. They must be honored with a soft joint if tile is installed on top. Not having a soft joint on top of this control joint can cause cracked tile. There must be expansion joints on all big floors.

We installed a membrane on top of this control joint to keep it free and open when we installed the tile.

This entire floor received two coats of Ardex 8+9 to act as a crack isolation membrane to help prevent cracking tile which has a higher probability of happening if tile is set direct to the concrete.

The original control joint in the cement is under this grout line. It is being filled with 100% silicone, which is flexible, to act as an expansion joint. This silicone matches the grout color.

The entire perimeter—- anywhere there was a plane change, was filled with flexible silicone sealant.

We promise: No cracked grout in corners if you don’t use grout. Silicone is far superior because it lasts.

Here’s a couple examples of tiles “tenting”. This will happen sometimes if tile floors have no room for expansion.
